Do You Go Into a Family Coma after Thanksgiving?
Food preparation is usually the focus of the Thanksgiving holiday and yes, that does land most of us in a food coma. And, what about a family coma after too much togetherness?
When I say "Thanksgiving", most of you probably think of a food coma, but what about a family coma? Yes, a family coma.
Family coma is the feeling of wanting to crawl into bed and not come out until January because your family is A LOT to take in and it all begins at Thanksgiving.
The relational side is NOT what you prepare for at Thanksgiving...and that is what leaves you feeling overwhelmed, emotional, and completely drained. Instead you focus on food preparation, and that is essential too.
You prepare for the turkey to be defrosted in time to cook.
You prepare for the pies to be baked ahead of time so they don't take up space in the oven.
You prepare the side dishes in a specific order so everything is done at the same time.
But do you prepare for the relational side of Thanksgiving?
And, when I say "relational side", I mean the not-so-kind relating that happens when family gets together for what is suppose to be one big happy family gathering and everyone ignores the problems that lurk right under the surface.
Uncle Joe talking politics loudly and forcefully
Your sister sending passive aggressive "suggestions" for how you parent your kids
Your mother-in-law repeatedly voicing how sad she is that you are refusing to come to both Christmas Eve and Day this year
Everyone holding their breath around the unresolved conflicts that happened throughout the year
These are what you want to prepare for because when you prepare for the relational side of the family gathering, you will feel more confident in handling awkward situations with ease and less drained emotionally and mentally after the gathering.
